SEEKING GREATER TRANSPARENCY
Background
Capterio is an agile and specialist project developer focused on flare capture projects. It brings together assets with technologies, know-how and financing to deliver on-the-ground, real-world, safe and reliable solutions.
The team at Capterio use their own purpose-built tool FlareIntel (www.flareintel.com) which provides real-time insights into flaring for every asset, operator and non-operated partner worldwide. When they came to us they were looking to build greater transparency about infrastructure in proximity to flares, flare ownership and flare operations - but getting the right data was a challenge.

“YOU CAN’T REDUCE FLARING IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE IT’S HAPPENING”
The problem
Capterio is a mission-driven product developer with the aim of reducing global flaring - responding to climate change and the need for a reduction in emissions. The first step in reducing flaring is knowing who’s doing it and what local infrastructure is supporting it, but gaining access to this data is not always easy.
In the words of Capterio’s FlareIntel Lead - John-Henry Charles:
“We knew where big flares and big project opportunities were, but didn’t always have a 100% view on the local infrastructure or companies involved for our development proposals.”
The team were looking for “access to value-for-money data, an easy-to-use platform and an agile dynamic partner.” This is where the MapStand Hub came in.
COLLABORATE AND INTEGRATE
The solution
The first step was to work collaboratively with Capterio to decide how our data could be beneficial to Capterio’s work - particularly in the context of using infrastructure data to support their project screening.
Through our APIs we were able to integrate data directly into Capterio’s FlareIntel tool. This gave a richer level of transparency of global flaring. Capterio had originally considered building up their own dataset from scratch, but soon realised “working with MapStand was the most time-effective solution”.
Mapstand data now contributes towards Capterio’s view on the operator of flares, in addition to their analysis on proximity of flares to gas pipelines, and supports their view on infrastructure as they develop solutions and project concepts.
MORE USERS, SHORTER SCREENING TIMES, EXCITING FUTURE
The results
Integrating MapStand data with FlareIntel has been an unquestioned success. The tool now has over 500 regular users, a number that continues to rise, and project screening times have been reduced significantly.
Partnering with MapStand has led to a deeper understanding of local infrastructure dynamics and local solutions. Of the collaboration, Capterio’s FlareIntel Lead - John-Henry Charles said:
“MapStand have been really helpful to our work. They are a responsive and thoughtful team with lots of ideas. They helped us from the early stages of thinking through MapStand Hub’s applications to our service and have been an agile and dynamic partner ever since. We look forward to continued collaboration in the future.”
